Here are ten of my favorite makeup tips for assisting you in creating a more youthful appearance:
1. Moisturise
Apply moisturiser to your face and leave it for a few minutes before applying your concealer, and then your foundation. Your skin may look a little plumper and will certainly take application of concealer and foundation much better.
2. Light Concealer
Your concealer should be a shade lighter than your skin and applied with a blending brush, before you apply your foundation to your face. The combination of the blended concealer and foundation will hide imperfections.
3. Add Water
To achieve a smoother finish use a creamy foundation mixed with a drop of water; mix the foundation and water on the back of your hand, using a foundation brush. This is more forgiving than the out-of-the-bottle foundation applied with your fingertips.
4. Lighter Blusher
Use a lighter, softer shade of blusher on the apples of your cheeks, using a blusher brush, for that youthful glow. Do not use blusher with glitter... it belongs on the young and on the 70s disco scene.
5. Softer Eyeliner
Choose softer eyeliners in greys or browns and draw them only on your upper eye lid, as close to the lashes as possible. A pencilled eyeliner, well blended, will enhance your eyes rather than draw attention to fine lines. Apply eyeliner to the bottom lid (under the lashes) for just one-third of the way in from the outer corner.
6. Powder Eye-shadows
Use powder eye shadow because cream based formulas can settle into the creases of the lids. Powder when applied correctly will stay put for longer too. Use neutral colours and always use a brush to apply.
7. Avoid Excess Glitter & Sparkle
Avoid shimmer. Formulas with shiny particles illuminate every line, pore and wrinkle. Leave the shimmer and glitter for "tweens" and young girls who are still able to get away with this sort of bling!
8. Use Highlight
Instead of shading your face, switch to highlighting. We are looking for a plumped appearance which is more youthful than gaunt, sagging look. We want our skin to look smooth. Use pale shades to accentuate under the eyebrows, and use an eye pencil on the inside of the bottom lid to open the eyes. It's never a good idea to use blusher along the cheekbones, and it should never be used under the cheekbones. As we age, blusher should be applied to the apples of the cheeks only; this will create a more natural and plumper look.
9. Blot Instead of Powder
Too much powder will make you look older. Everyone in the make up industry is unanimous on this point. Be careful how much powder you apply and avoid re-applying through the day as a quick fix. For a shiny forehead, nose and chin, use blotting papers rather than powder. While no one likes shiny, that feathery paper bag look that comes with using too much powder is equally unappealing; besides,a glow is more youthful in appearance.
10. Practice Makes Perfect
Take some time out to sit in front of a mirror and experiment with these tips to create a softer, more youthful looking you. You can also take yourself into department stores and have yourself made up at different make-up counters. Whichever is your favourite look, take a 'selfie' and practice at home; you won't look as you want immediately, but you will get it right eventually.
